Ewell “Doak” Walker Jr. was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1927 and showcased his athletic talents early at Highland Park High School. By 1944, he led his team to the state championship game, cementing his status as a local Texas legend.
After a brief stint in the Merchant Marine during World War II, Walker made an unexpected choice to attend Southern Methodist University (SMU) rather than joining his friend Bobby Layne at the University of Texas. Walker’s college career at SMU was nothing short of extraordinary. Despite the challenges of post-war America and a competitive football landscape, he led SMU to numerous successes, including a 9-0-2 season in 1947 and a Southwest Conference title.
Walker’s ability on the field was unmatched. In 1947, he rushed for 684 yards, scored eight touchdowns, and even threw for 342 yards and three scores, earning him consensus All-American honors. His all-around performance continued into 1948, where he led SMU to a Cotton Bowl victory and won the Heisman Trophy, solidifying his place in college football history.
After his collegiate success, Walker transitioned to the NFL, where he played for the Detroit Lions. Despite being considered small at 5’11” and 173 pounds, he made a significant impact, helping the Lions secure three divisional titles and two NFL championships. Walker’s NFL career was brief but illustrious, earning him induction into both the College Football Hall of Fame (1959) and the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1986).
