Notably, he helped the Bears win the inaugural NFL Championship in 1932, sealing the game with a controversial touchdown pass. Nagurski’s NFL career was punctuated by bruising encounters and memorable feats, including his return to the league during World War II, where he helped the Bears secure another championship in 1943.
In addition to football, Nagurski pursued a successful wrestling career, becoming a popular figure on the Depression-era wrestling circuit. His financial struggles, due in part to the Great Depression, led him to wrestling, which was then a booming form of entertainment.
Nagurski’s impact on the game endures through the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, established in 1993 to honor college football’s best defensive player. Though known for his offensive might, the award reflects his foundational toughness and “glorious defender” roots, as implied by his birth name, Bronislaw. Inducted into both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame, Nagurski remains a symbol of football’s rugged early days, celebrated for his exceptional power and legacy in both college football history and NFL history.
