Syracuse University: The Legend of Number 44
Syracuse University built its legendary football tradition on the backs of some of the greatest running backs the sport has ever seen.
For a period of just over a decade, three different players wore the number 44 for the Orange, creating an unparalleled legacy of excellence at one position and cementing the program's place in college football history.
The story begins with the legendary Jim Brown, arguably the greatest football player of all time. His dominance established Syracuse as a national power.
He then passed the number to Ernie Davis, "The Elmira Express," who led the Orange to their only national championship in 1959. In 1961, Davis became the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy.
The tradition was then carried on by Floyd Little, a three-time All-American who continued the legacy of greatness. This holy trinity of running backs created a tradition that defines the program and gives Syracuse a unique and powerful place in college football history. 🏈
