Penn State University: Linebacker U

The Penn State Nittany Lions built their national reputation on discipline, defense, and unparalleled stability. Known as "Linebacker U," the program is famous for its simple, classic uniforms and a tradition of tough, fundamentally-sound football that reflects its blue-collar identity.

For more than four decades, legendary coach Joe Paterno defined the program. He guided Penn State from an independent eastern power to a Big Ten stalwart, preaching a philosophy of "Success with Honor." Paterno's teams won two national championships, highlighted by the 1986 squad that pulled off a legendary upset over Miami in the Fiesta Bowl.

The program earned its famous nickname by consistently producing some of the greatest linebackers in the sport's history. That on-field toughness complements a proud history of unity, best exemplified by the team's groundbreaking stand for integration at the 1948 Cotton Bowl.

Penn State's legacy gives it a powerful and significant place in college football history. 🏈
