Carlisle Indian Industrial School: The Great Innovators

For a brief, brilliant period in the early 20th century, the Carlisle Indian Industrial School fielded one of the most innovative and exciting teams in the nation.

The federally-run boarding school for Native Americans became an unlikely football powerhouse that forever changed how the game is played.

Legendary coach Pop Warner used his smaller, faster Carlisle teams to revolutionize football tactics. Carlisle pioneered the use of speed, deception, and the forward pass to defeat the era's larger, more powerful opponents from schools like Harvard and Yale.

The team's greatest star was the legendary Jim Thorpe, arguably the greatest athlete in American history. Thorpe led Carlisle to a national championship in 1912 and masterminded stunning upsets that captivated the country.

Though the school closed in 1918, Carlisle's influence far outlived its existence. The program proved that innovation could triumph over brute force and created a legacy that remains one of the most compelling chapters in college football history. 🏈
