George Gipp: The Immortal Gipper

George Gipp was Notre Dame's first superstar, but he became an immortal figure in American folklore through his tragic death and one of the most famous speeches in sports history. O

n the field, "The Gipper" was a phenomenal talent. A versatile do-it-all player, he set school records for rushing and passing and became Notre Dame's first consensus All-American in 1920.

Just weeks after his final game, Gipp died from a throat infection at the age of 25.

Eight years later, coach Knute Rockne inspired his underdog team by relaying Gipp's supposed deathbed wish: to "win one for the Gipper." The team rallied for a stunning victory over Army.

The story, later popularized by Ronald Reagan who portrayed Gipp in a film, made "The Gipper" a household name. His legend transcends his incredible playing career and represents one of the most powerful tales in college football history. 🏈
