Doak Walker: The Man Who Built the House

Doak Walker was the sensational, do-it-all player from Southern Methodist University who captured the nation's attention in the post-World War II era.

A three-time All-American, his immense talent and popularity were so great that he literally helped expand one of the sport's most famous stadiums.

Walker was the ultimate offensive weapon; he could run, pass, and catch with equal skill, while also handling kicking and punting duties. He led SMU to national prominence and was rewarded with the Heisman Trophy in 1948.

His stardom drew such massive crowds that the Cotton Bowl stadium had to be expanded to accommodate the demand, earning it the nickname, "The House That Doak Built."

Today, his legacy is honored with the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation's top running back, a fitting tribute to one of the most complete players in college football history. 🏈
