Walter Camp: The Father of American Football

No figure is more essential to college football history than Walter Camp. Known as the "Father of American Football," the Yale icon almost single-handedly transformed the chaotic game of the late 19th century into the sport we recognize today. His innovations are the very bedrock of the game. 🏈

Camp introduced the line of scrimmage, the system of downs and distance, and the snap from center to a quarterback. These rules created the strategic, stop-and-start action that defines American football.

He also reduced teams to eleven players, helped standardize scoring, and in 1889, created the first All-America team—an honor that remains the sport's most prestigious.

Every aspect of the modern game flows from the genius of Walter Camp, a true founding father of college football history.
