General Bob Neyland: The Defensive Mastermind

General Bob Neyland built a football dynasty at the University of Tennessee on one simple principle: the other team can’t win if it can’t score.

A decorated Army officer, Neyland applied military discipline and strategic genius to craft the most dominant defenses in college football history.

His defensive statistics are simply staggering. In his 216 career victories, Neyland's teams recorded 112 shutouts. He coached the last major college team to go an entire regular season undefeated, untied, and unscored upon in 1939.

The General led his Volunteers to four national championships and developed his famous "Seven Maxims of Football," a guide to winning through fundamentals and field position.

As both a military hero and a coaching legend, Neyland established a tradition of suffocating defense that defines the Tennessee program to this day. 🏈
